The following websites can be used by children, or teachers who require a short activity for either lesson extension or to reinforce a concept. Some links can be used for Language Arts curriculum, and may be integrated into a lesson or unit. The list of sites will keep growing, so come back and check out what new sites that may have been added!

  1. KidsLIT Website

This website is designed for children to publish their work, or read literature written by other children. The categories include poetry, short stories, and book reviews. Children can also publish their artwork. This site could be used from K-12, but to date is primarily used for Grades 5-8.

  2. Hangman

This is the game Hangman. Instead of playing with a partner on paper you can now play by yourself on the computer. The words are simple and contain either 3 or 4 letters. I found in 10 games that some of the words started to repeat, but this would be a great game for students in Grades 1-4 who are learning about the pattern of letters.

3. Word Jumble

This is a word game. You are given several letters scrambled, and you must unscramble them to make a word that fits into the category of the week. For example the category could be Disney Characters, or it could be Parts of a House. There are 3 games, with 5 words in each game. The next week the answers are posted, so you can check how you did the week before. There are also links to other games that children may enjoy exploring. This site could be used for Elementary students (Grade 3 - 7).

4. Virtual Verse

This is a spin-off from magnetic poetry you can buy. There are many words to choose from, and you click and drag the words of your choice to write a poem. Recommended for Grades 4 - 9.

5. A Word A Day

This is a great vocabulary builder. You can register, and have a word a day sent to you, or you can sign on and check today's or yesterday's word. It is also possible to check the archives for the words used each day, back to 1994. The words are picked randomly from a database, using words from a particular theme. Along with the word, is a definition, and correct pronunciation of the word. You can even listen to the word if you like. The words are more difficult, so would be used for Grades 6 - adult.

6. Book Report Outline

This is a book report outline that can be used as is or modified. The site says it is under construction, but it contained everything necessary to use. Mrs. Johnson offers help with editing, but I think the invitation is meant for her own students using the page. Students can go directly to the site, or it can be printed and used at their desks. Good for Grades 3 - 7.

7. Harriet Tubman

This is a unit on Harriet Tubman and the underground railroad. It can be used for Language Arts and Social Studies. The site was created by a grade 2 class, but would fit well with the grade 3 IRP. The students created crossword puzzles, a story map, and timeline. The site provides an excellent example of ideas that can be applied to another novel study.

Recommended: Grade 3
