ORGANIZATIONAL STRATEGIES

& SAFETY CONCERNS

Supervision

  1. Students should be aware of the stop command used by the teacher and other students. As soon as the stop command is given students will immediately stop their activity.
  2. Students must be supervised at all times during activities that have a high risk of injury.
  3. During wrestling matches, students should be supervised to ensure that matches do not proceed out of the designated area.
  4. Wrestling matches should also be supervised to ensure that all students are free of hitting any obstacles (other students).
  5. During some activities the students will act as “guards or protectors” to ensure that matches do not run into each other.
  6. If any discipline issues arise the students will stop all activity until the problem has been dealt with.
  7. At no time will the students be engaged in activity with out teacher supervision.

Activity Selection

  1. Activities selected should reflect the level of the students:
o Start with ground wrestling and after students are familiar with rules and safety issues, progress to standing wrestling.
  2. Activities will progress from most basic to more advanced to ensure students know the basic skills before progressing to anything more difficult or dangerous:
    o Basic Rules of wrestling
    o Prone & Parterre positions
o Safety considerations with ground wrestling
    o Ground wrestling
o Different tilts, turns and counters (safety considerations will be addressed for all techniques).
  3. During games/activities there will only be only one on one wrestling. No two on ones or group attacks during any of the games or activities!

Environment

  1. Students will be aware of all the rules before taking part in any wrestling exercise.
  2. Students will have the proper foot ware and clothing before participating.
  3. Students will not be wearing any jewelry or anything metal on their clothes or body (to prevent injury).
  4. Students will be matched up with wrestling partners according to weight, size, and ability.
  5. Students will be participating on equipment that had been inspected and deemed safe for use.

How we intend to handle these considerations?

To ensure that the students involved in our wrestling unit are participating safely and so no injuries arise we intend to take all safety considerations very seriously. Our lesson plans progress from basic to more advanced from each lesson. Our first lesson begins with the rules and regulations of wrestling. We will advise the students of the importance of following these rules to ensure no injuries occur during any of our lessons. Any student that does not follow these rules will not be allowed to continue to participate in the wrestling unit.

Conduct on the mats

  1. No punching, kicking, scratching, or biting.
  2. All students will know and obey the STOP command.
  3. Students will only take on other students in a one on one match. There will be no ganging up of other students.
  4. All students will be matched according to weight. There will be no excuses for heavier students being partners with lighter students.

What to wear?

  1. Students will dress in appropriate clothing and foot wear. Appropriate clothing includes, properly fitting t-shirts or sweatshirts, pants or shorts, and no clothing with any metal on it (including zippers, snaps, or buckles). Proper foot wear includes either indoor only shoes, socks or bare feet. The best is for everyone to have the same foot wear, with shoes being the best.
  2. All jewelry including rings, earrings, and necklaces will be removed prior to starting any kind of activity.
  3. No metal clips or metal hair accessories shall be worn.

Summary

As instructors we will position ourselves so that we can see the students at all times, and not turn our back to any of the activities. We will ensure that the students know the stop command and obey it. We will ensure that all students are wearing proper clothing and foot wear before they are allowed to participate. We will also ensure that all match ups are of the correct weight for each student. We will finally check all equipment safety and ensure its proper set up to prevent any injuries from occurring.

All four lessons begin with a proper warm up to ensure that the students are physiologically warmed up, as well as psychologically. The warm ups are designed to bring the students into the wrestling frame of mind so that they are ready to learn new skills. After the warm up all four lessons also include aerobic dynamic stretching which concentrates on the main muscles used in wrestling: neck, shoulders, groin, and hamstrings.

The first lesson of the unit begins with the basic skills. It introduces the prone and parterre position. In this lesson there is no actual wrestling. The students are to focus on learning the basic skills before moving on to anything more difficult. When going through each new technique, the students will be shown the proper way to execute as well as any safety considerations that should be taken. The students can not move on to another activity until everyone can properly execute the technique safely. In each of the lessons we will also review all of the techniques previously learned to help keep the skill fresh in the students mind to ensure that they are doing it properly and safely. At the end of class the students will be involved in a closure that reviews the lesson. They will be reminded of skill cues as well as any safety issue that arose during the lesson.
