Dr. Blythe
Shepard Ð Educational Psychology and Leadership Studies
While
living in the southern interior of British Columbia, Blythe completed the
Professional Development Program in Education at Simon Fraser University and
her B.A. in Psychology from the University of Waterloo. During this time she
founded a community-based, rural elementary school where she taught for 12
years. As a result of her close and prolonged involvement with students,
parents, and community agencies, she developed an interest in counselling
children and their families.
When Blythe
Shepard first came to the University of Victoria in 1995 as a M.Ed. student in
Counselling Psychology, she intended to complete her program in one year and
return to her home in the interior of British Columbia. Seven years later, she
completed her M.A. in Counselling Psychology and her Ph.D. in Educational
Psychology. Her experiences in
Victoria have been enriching. Blythe held two University of Victoria Graduate
Fellowships, received a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship, and several PresidentÕs Research
Scholarships. She has completed a practicum in school counselling with School
District #61 and a practicum with Counselling Services at the University of
Victoria. During her doctoral program, she interned with psychologists at
Victoria Child and Youth Mental Health Services and with school psychologists
in Victoria. She has been involved in course writing for the diploma program in
Career and Personal Planning and has produced a Personal Planning Curriculum
Delivery Guide for elementary teachers. With a project development grant from
the Canadian Counseling Association Career Development Chapter, she developed
and presented at national conferences a Creating meaning and Making
Connections: Life planning Workshop. She became a
sessional instructor at UVic in 1999 and was appointed Visiting Professor in
2000 for one year.
BlytheÕs doctoral
dissertation involved exploring the ways in which young women construct future
plans within the context of their rural communities. This ethnographic study
led to research opportunities with Coasts Under Stress Research Project (funded
by SSHRC/NSERC) and with Healthy Youth in a Healthy Society Project (funded by
CIHR). She has published articles on possible selves mapping, career
development for young people in rural areas, and career and life planning
issues of rural young women.
Teaching
interests for Blythe involve career and lifeplanning, counsellor training,
school counselling, child and adolescent development, and qualitative research
design. Areas of research interest include child and youth mental health,
life-career planning, health of rural communities, identity development,
counsellor education, and qualitative methods and issues. She is currently
Vice-President of the Career Development Chapter of the Canadian Counselling
Association and on the board of directors for the Centre for Youth and Society.
Blythe
is delighted at the opportunity to continue working with the UVIC faculty with its strong reputation in
counsellor training and in collaborative research work. She looks forward to
becoming involved in interdisciplinary research.
