REPORT ON NOVEMBER 2003

Second Annual Faculty and Graduate

Student Fall Research Forum

The second annual Fall Research Forum took place on November 7, 2003 and was a great success. We started the day with coffee and muffins and welcomes by Larry Yore, Chair of the Faculty Research Culture Committee, Susan Corner from the Executive of the Association for Graduate Education Students, and Max Uhlemann, Host for the sessions of the day. We then attended four excellent sessions between 9:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Eight speakers presented in the sessions. Attendance at the Forum sessions averaged 17 faculty and students.

The attached photos were taken at the November 2003 Research Forum. This report is stored at the RCC web site.

The Summer and Fall Research Forums provide us with energy to conduct an additional Forum this year, one in February 2004. Watch for information on this Forum for another half-day of sharing and renewal on research happening in our Faculty.

Lynda Coupal, Antoinette Oberg and Bob Dalton made up the panel that discussed How To Prepare Students for Addressing Ethics in Research. They provided guidance and direction for students beginning, and in the midst of, research.

Peter Cole, Max Uhlemann and Michael Roth sat on a panel to address writing for publication in journals. With three diverse perspectives, the audience was provided with many effective strategies. The panel format encouraged dialogue between panel and audience members.

Audience members at the Second Annual Fall Research Forum were presented with three informative one-hour sessions, as well as having a discussion around research support. Feedback from the forum was positive. Faculty and graduate students look forward to the Connections 2004 Conference on May 6th 2004, which is organized by the Research Culture Committee.

Larry Yore, chair of the Research Culture Committee, facilitated a discussion about enhancing future research support in the Faculty of Education. Several graduate students, including a representative from the Association of Graduate Education Students, contributed thoughts and ideas to support graduate students in their research endeavors.

The research forum gave graduate students a chance to connect to discuss research interests and their experiences with the whole research process. Students were informed about the monthly presentations, Third Tuesdays and Third Thursdays, hosted by the Association of Graduate Education Students (AGES). These sessions take place in the graduate student center to support research in the Faculty of Education.
