Teacher Education Program

 


First Nations Teacher Education

A teacher education program in partnership with the North Island College with a focus on Aboriginal perspective in the classroom is currently in development stages.

 

Developmental Standard Term Certificate in First Nations language and Culture
This is a laddered program that allows First Nations language learnes and speakers to receive training and the opportunity to teach First Nations languages in schools and communities, and eventualy earn their Professional Teaching Certificate.Patti and June smiling

Step one:

  • First Nations Language Certificate (FNLC) in partnership with BC College of Teachers, Campbell River School District, and First Nations Language Authority. The goal of this certificate is to increase the oral fluency and literacy in First Nations languages.

Step two:

  • Certificate in Aboriginal Language Revitalization (CALR) in partnership with UVic Continuing Studies and Linguistics department provides training that focuses on language revitalization.

Step three:

  • Development Standard Teaching Certificate (DSTC) issued by BC College of Teachers, provides a solid grounding in teacher education and allows graduates to teach in BC elementary schools.

Step four:

  • Professional Teaching Certificate and a Bachelors Degree in Education offered by the University of Victoria.

 

Currently the Faculty of Education has one DSTC program pilot project offered in Campbell River for the laguages of —Kwak'walla/Liq'walla,  and the Coast Salish language of the Klahoose, and Homolco and Sliammon peoples.  DSTC students completed the first stage of certification in December 2005 and began the second certificate the in January 2006.

Development of similar language revitalization programs partnering with other local languages is under discussion.
