Coast to Coast for Physical Education!  Congratulations Tyler Duncan!

Tyler Duncan - Cape Spear Arrival

On March 31, 2008, Physical Education student Tyler Duncan dipped his 'wheels' into the Pacific at Cadboro Bay's Gyro Park Beach at the launch of his Cross-Canada cycling tour to promote physical activity for Canadian children.

Along the way Tyler spoke with thousands of school children, community groups and policy makers about the need for quality physical education programs for all Canadian children and youth.

7,000 kms later, through wind, rain and snow, (and a few blisters) Tyler successfully completed his incredible journey arriving at Cape Spear, Newfoundland, the most eastern point in North America on June 26, 2008.

Aboriginal Education Community Visits – February – April 2008

In many indigenous cultures, it is important that neighbours come together in acknowledgement of each other.  Often, we share our food, our histories and our knowledge.  This is the basis for strong relationship building and peacemaking.

In that spirit, Dr. Lorna Williams, Director of Aboriginal Education, and her dedicated staff offered  Education faculty and staff unique opportunities to meet with members of local Aboriginal communities and organizations in a meaningful and respectful manner through planned weekly visits. These organizations were selected based on the important and dynamic work they do in the areas of child and family services, physical education, adult education and language and cultural revitalization.

These visits culminated on Friday April 11, 2008, with a traditional Coast Salish luncheon at the Tsartlip Cultural Centre with faculty and staff joined with community members, Aboriginal leaders and special guests for an afternoon of debriefing, dialogue and discussion.

The event was an overwhelming success!
