Undergraduate Programs

First Degree Programs

Bachelor of Education (Elementary Curriculum)Bachelor of Education (Elementary Curriculum)

This program prepares students to become elementary school teachers. It leads to a Bachelor of Education degree and a professional teaching certificate. Students must complete at least one year of approved university-level course work before applying to the Faculty of Education.

 

Bachelor of Education (Secondary Curriculum)

This is a five-year degree program for students accepted with a teaching area of art, music, or physical education. Students can take art or music as a single teaching area or in combination with an approved second teaching area. Physical education must be taken in combination with an approved second teaching area. Students must complete at least one year of approved university-level course work before applying to the Faculty of Education.

 

Bachelor of Arts (Recreation and Health Education) ealth Education)

This four-year program provides students with the knowledge and skills they need to study and practice community recreation and health promotion and education. The Recreation and Health Education Program is available only as a co-operative education program. It is part of the School of Exercise Science, Physical, and Health Education. Students must complete at least one year of approved university-level course work before applying to the Faculty of Education. For more details.

 

Bachelor of Science (Kinesiology)

This four-year program offers a science perspective in the study of fitness, sport and physical activity. A co-operative education program option is available. It is part of the School of Exercise Science, Physical, and Health Education. Students must complete at least one year of approved university-level course work before applying to the Faculty of Education. For more details.

Second Degree Programs

Bachelor of Education Post-Degree Professional Program (Elementary)

This is a second degree program for university graduates who wish to become elementary school classroom teachers. Normally, the program is offered over 16 months. Please consult an academic adviser if you would like to take hte program over two academic years. Completion of the program qualifies candidates for teacher certification and a Bachelor of Education degree.

 

Bachelor of Education Post-Degree Professional Program (Middle Years) - Pilot Program

This is a second degree program for university graduates who wish to become middle school classroom teachers. Students can complete the program over 16 months. Completion of the program qualifies candidates for teacher certification and a Bachelor of Education degree. For more details.

 

Bachelor of Education Post-Degree Professional Program (Secondary)

This program is designed for university graduates who wish to become high school classroom teachers. Completion of 24 units of specified course work, in three terms over a  16 month period, qualifies candiates for teacher certification. An additional specified 6.0 units of course work may be taken to complete a Bachelor of Education degree.

Continuing Studies in Education works with schools, districts, teachers’ associations and communities to bring a rich and diverse range of credit and professional/renewal offerings to educators of our children and youth.

Graduate Programs

Department of Curriculum and Instruction

This department offers a diverse range of masters and doctoral programs, full and part-time, on and off-campus, to over 300 graduate students. Visit the Department of Curriculum and Instruction website.

School of Exercise Science, Physical, and Health Education

Masters and doctoral programs offered in the School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education are both thesis and non-thesis based, in a variety of specific areas. Visit the School of Exercise Science, Physical, and Health Education website.

Department of Educational Psychology and Leadership Studies

The Department of Educational Psychology and Leadership Studies offers graduate programs in a variety of counseling and educational psychology areas. Visit the Department of Educational Psychology and Leadership Studies website.

Community-based Masters Degree Programs

The Faculty of Education currently offers community-based masters degree programs in counselling, curriculum studies, early childhood education, and leadership studies, to cohorts of professionals in education and other fields. These programs are two years long and are normally delivered in local communities during the winter and spring sessions. There is usually one summer session at the university. In some counselling programs, course work is completed over three consecutive summers at the University of Victoria, and two winter terms in students’ home community. There are only 18 students in each cohort, and classes are normally delivered face-to-face, although many courses are conducted through the Internet. For more details.
