Orion Lecture Series - Dorothy Heathcote  - June 2, 2009

"Mantle of the Expert: A Further Paradigm for Education"

Dorothy Heathcote taught at the Universities of Durham and Newcastle-upon-Tyne for thirty-six years and is, without question, one of the greatest teachers of our time. Her innovative approaches to educational drama include teaching in role, mantle of the expert and rolling role. These revolutionary approaches to classroom practice challenge traditional assumptions about the fundamental nature of knowledge, education and pedagogy.

The Lecture was presented by the Department of Theatre and Faculty of Education through the generous support of the Orion Fund in Fine Arts and the Faculty of Fine Arts.

The School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education was proud to host the start of student Tyler Duncan's bike tour across Canada on March 31st.  Former Olympian Silken Laumann, local dignitaries and over 250 area school children gathered at Gyro Park Beach in Cadboro Bay as Tyler dipped his 'wheels' into the Pacific Ocean to start his country-wide cycle and speaking tour to promote physical education.

The Get Smart. Get Active tour will consist of a self-supported bike ride, completed by Tyler, from Victoria, B.C. to St. John’s, Newfoundland. While crossing the country Tyler aims to talk to students, teachers, administrators, and parents, to help raise awareness about the need for quality daily physical education and daily physical activity in children’s lives. The tour will also aim to raise $100,000 for charities involved in the advocacy of physical activity and education.
