Approved Laboratory Science - 3.0 units

Because elementary teachers take a strong field-based, hands-on approach to teaching sciences, you should choose science courses that offer a significant lab component. We recommend courses with a weekly 3-hour lab but will accept those that average at least 1.5 hours of lab time a week. If possible, choose courses from two disciplines, for example, one biology AND one earth and ocean sciences or physics course.

Required:

  • 3.0 units of course work from astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth and ocean science (geology) and physics. Several courses meet this requirement, including UVic’s ASTR 101 (new), ASTR 102 (new), ASTR 120, BIOL 150C (no longer offered), BIOL 190A, BIOL 190B, CHEM 101, CHEM 102, EOS 110, EOS 120, PHYS 102, PHYS 112.

Not Accepted

  • Human biology, anatomy, physiology, computer science, geography and kinesiology courses.
  • Courses completed more than ten years ago.

Selection Process

We will invite eligible applicants to attend an interview (normally in early April). Applicants who remain eligible after the interview will be ranked according to a score based on their interview (30%) and their 30-unit grade-point average (70%). We will admit applicants (up to our quota) starting with the highest score first and working towards the lowest score.

Having the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee you an offer of admission. If the number of eligible applicants exceeds the established quota, some applicants will be not admitted. Questions? Speak with an academic adviser.
