Notes

Approved English - 3.0 units

Required:

  • 3.0 units of approved English literature and composition. At least 1.5 units must be English literature. Several English courses meet this requirement, including UVic’s ENGL (115 or 135), 146 (formerly 125) or 147 (formerly 145). If you’re not sure whether a course qualifies, check with an academic adviser. Note: Technical or creative writing courses cannot be accepted.

Teaching Concentration or Teaching Major

You may apply to our program with one teaching major but your job prospects may be limited. School districts prefer to hire teachers who are able to teach more than one subject. For this reason, we encourage you to enter this program with two teaching concentrations rather than one teaching major.

Approved Teaching Subjects

A teaching concentration is normally made up of 9.0 units of approved upper-level course work (300 and/or 400-level at UVic). Specific lower-level courses may also be required for some subject areas.

  • Two teaching concentrations are required to be considered for admission.
  • A minimum grade-point average of 4.00 on the UVic 9-point scale (UVic B- grade) is required on the upper level courses required for the teaching concentrations.
  • Note that you may not choose both concentrations from German, Information and Communication Technology Integration, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish and theatre.

A teaching major normally requires 15.0 units of approved upper-level course work (300 and/or 400 level at UVic). Specific lower-level courses may also be required for some subject areas.

  • You may apply with a single teaching major. To increase your job prospects we recommend that all prospective teachers have two subject areas.
  • A minimum grade-point average of 4.00 on the UVic 9-point scale (UVic B- grade) is required on the upper level courses required for the teaching major.

Teaching Area Admission Requirements

We have prepared an admission checklist form (PDF file format) for each subject area. You will need Adobe Reader to open the documents.

If you have any questions about the admission requirements for teaching areas listed below, consult an academic adviser in room A250 of the MacLaurin Building. If you completed courses other than at UVic, be sure to bring your transcripts.

Selection Process

All applicants who have satisfied the admission requirements described above will be contacted to attend an interview. Applicants must successfully pass the interview to remain eligible.

An admission score is calculated for all applicants who remain eligible after the interview. The admission score is based partly on the interview (30%) and partly on the 30-unit grade-point average (70%). Applicants will be admitted to each teaching area starting with the highest score working down to the lowest. If the number of eligible applicants for a teaching subject exceeds the subject area quota, not all applicants will be admitted. The quota for each teaching subject is normally 30. The only subject areas for which we regularly have more than 30 eligible applicants are English and social studies.

Note that this does not apply to the students applying with a music teaching area.
