Physical education must be taken in combination with a second approved teaching subject. Students wishing to teach other subjects will take a degree in another faculty and apply for the Bachelor of Education Post-Degree Professional Program (Secondary).
Program Structure
This program takes place over five winter sessions. For the first four years you will take courses that prepare you academically for your teaching subjects. You can choose a single expanded teaching area in art or music, or add a second teaching area to your art or music teaching area. Choose your second teaching area from: art, biological sciences, chemistry, English, French, mathematics, music (choral or instrumental), physical education, physics, social studies or theatre.
Note: If you select physical education as a teaching area, you must pair it with another teaching area. You cannot pair physical education with German or theatre.
During year five - your professional year - you will take professional courses that prepare you to teach. You will also spend an extended time in secondary school classrooms. Normally, students attend all professional year courses as a co-ordinated program during one full winter session. You will not, therefore, be permitted to take any courses other than the ones specified in the professional year program. To be admitted to the professional year, you must meet certain requirements. To find out about these requirements, go to regulation 12.5.1 in the UVic Calendar.
The Bachelor of Education (Secondary Curriculum) program format can be found at 12.5.2 in the UVic Calendar.
