Admission Requirements Bachelor of Education (Secondary Curriculum)

Admission Requirements

Admission to this program requires:

    • Completion of 12.0 units of course work including 3.0 units of approved English.
    • A grade-point average of at least 3.00 on a 9-point scale (equivalent to UVic’s C+ grade) on your most recent 12.0-unit session. If your most recent session is less than 12.0 units, you must have a grade-point average of at least 3.00 on a 9-point scale (equivalent to UVic’s C+ grade) on your most recent consecutive 12.0 units.     • Admissibility to an art or music or physical education teaching area. Music education and physical education applicants with the prerequisite courses completed or in-progress will be invited to attend an interview in the spring. Art education applicants will participate in an informal interview in A E 103.

 

Transfer Credits

You may be able to transfer credit for courses taken at other post-secondary institutions as long as they are equivalent to those specified here. If you are planning to complete course work at another institution, please consult an academic adviser.


Admission Requirement Completion Dates

All admission requirements must be completed by April 30th of the year you intend to enter this program. If you are planning to enter the program in September 2009, all admission requirements must be completed by April 30th, 2009.

Accepted candidates will be notified as early as possible, but final acceptance may not be until late June. For more information about the selection process.

 


Art Education and Expanded Art Education Teaching Areas

Note: You must complete at least 12.0 units of course work to be eligible for admission. However, if you would like to complete the degree over five winter sessions, take 15.0 units of course work each year.

Required:

      • Two of ENGL 115 or 135, 125, 145
      • A E 103 with a grade of B or better

Recommended:

      • A E 200
      • A E 201
      • 3.0 units of approved academic electives or second teaching area courses

The academic electives must be taken outside the Faculty of Education. We cannot accept art education courses to satisfy this requirement.

You may choose to combine art education with a second teaching area selected from biological sciences, chemistry, English, French, German, mathematics, music (must satisfy admission requirements for this teaching area), physical education (must satisfy admission requirements for this teaching area), physics, social studies or theatre. You may also take art education as a single teaching Aarea (expanded art education).

 

Music Education Teaching Areas: Choral, Instrumental or Expanded

Note: You must complete at least 12.0 units of course work to be eligible for admission. However, if you would like to complete the degree over five winter sessions, take 15.0 units of course work each year.

Required:

      • Two of ENGL 115 or 135, 125, 145
      • M E 101 with a grade of B or better

Recommended:

      • MUS 101A
      • MUS 101B
      • MUS 170A
      • MUS 170B
      • MUS 180
      • 3.0 units of approved academic electives or second teaching area courses

 

The academic electives must be taken outside the Faculty of Education. We cannot accept music education courses to satisfy this requirement.

You may choose to combine music education (choral or instrumental) with a second teaching area selected from art education (must satisfy admission requirements for this teaching area), biological sciences, chemistry, English, French, German, mathematics, physical education (must satisfy admission requirements for this teaching area), physics, social studies or theatre. Music education (Expanded) requires 7.5 units of course work in an approved second teaching area.

 

Physical Education Teaching Area

Note: You must complete at least 12.0 units of course work to be eligible for admission. However, if you would like to complete the degree over five winter sessions, take 15.0 units of course work each year.

Required:

      • Two of ENGL (115 or 135), ENGL 125, ENGL 145
      • EPHE 141
      • EPHE 143

Recommended:

      • EPHE 106
      • EPHE 107
      • EPHE 120
      • EPHE 122
      • 3.0 units of approved academic elective or second teaching area courses

 

EPHE 106, 107, 120 and 122 are reserved for Faculty of Education students until a certain date and time. After that date and time have passed, others may register in the remaining seats. Other activity courses may also be taken in your first year. Refer to the physical education teaching area courses listed in the UVic Calendar or viewing the recommended sequence of courses provided on the School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education's web site.

The academic electives must be taken outside the Faculty of Education. We cannot accept physical education courses to satisfy this requirement. You may be able to use your second teaching area co-requisites as academic electives. Check with an academic adviser.

You must combine physical education with a second teaching area selected from art education (must satisfy admission requirements for this teaching area), biological sciences, chemistry, English, French, mathematics, music education (must satisfy admission requirements for this teaching area), physics or social studies. Physical education cannot be taken as a single teaching area and you may not combine it with German or theatre.

Selection Process

Art and music education applicants who remain eligible after the interview will be admitted to the quota in order of GPA.


Physical education applicants who remain eligible after the interview will be assessed an admission score. This score is based 30% on the interview and 70% on GPA. Applicants will be admitted to the quota on the basis of this score starting with the highest score working down to the lowest.
