Creating a spreadsheet

Create a spreadsheet by opening Excel, in which case a blank, new spreadsheet will appear.  You may also create a new spreadsheet, by going to the "File" menu and selecting "New."  For your assignment, you will be asked to create a spreadsheet that looks like the following:

Tips on how to enter and format text will be provided in the next section of the leson. Feel free to use different names, student numbers, etc., but there must be a column for student name, a column for student number, at least three columns for marks, a column for weighted mark, and your spreadsheet must include a row containing average marks, a row for the maximum mark possible, and a row for the weight of each assignment/test.  Your spreadsheet must also include a title and incorporate shading (like the yellow background above), lines around cell borders, and coloured text.  In the above example, each cell that contains a formula has blue-coloured text.  You will not enter any numbers in these cells.  Rather, you will enter a formula for calculating the number.   For now, leave these cells blank.  You will learn how to enter a formula in a following section.

You should save this spreadsheet with the name "XXXexcel" where XXX are the initials of your name.  Please continue to the next section of the lesson on formatting cells to learn how to shade cells, add cell borders, merge cells, and more.
