Prerequisites

Students will need to use Microsoft Excel software to complete this module. Other software may be used if approved by the instructor and arrangements are made as to how to submit the assignment so it is readable by the instructor. The Word I module should be completed before students begin to work on this Excel module, so that a familiarity with formatting is obtained.

Introduction

Excel is a spreadsheet software program by Microsoft. It can be used to perform simple calculations and create student lists, but can also allow users to incorporate advanced formulas and graphics.

In this introductory module, you will learn the basic features in Excel. In addition to using the instructional material provided in this module, students are expected to take advantage of the linked resources provided at the bottom of this webpage.  You are encouraged to post any questions to the listserv or email them to the coordinator.

Assignment

  1. Compose an email message addressed to compined@uvic.ca
  2. Include your personal email address in the "Cc" field to send a copy of the message to yourself
  3. The subject line of your email should be the three initials of *your* name followed by a short abbreviation of the module name. For example, Valerie Margit Irvine would use the subject line: VMIexcel1
  4. In the body of the email, identify the computer platform (Mac/Win) and the version of Excel (97, 2000, etc.) you used to create your presentation.
  5. Attach your Excel file to the email. To check that you have met all of the requirements, please review the objectives at the top of this page.
  6. Send the email
