Uploading Your Site
Internal UVic students have 10 MB of space on the university server. Outreach Students have access to upload to the UVic server, but will be charged four cents per megabyte per day for usage. Students who have server space with another Internet Service Provider can upload there instead.
When your webpages and images are ready to upload to this server space, so that everyone can view it, please visit the following website by UVic Computing Services:
Creating your own WWW page by the University of Victoria Computer Help Desk
http://helpdesk.uvic.ca/hownote/1997/ht97006.html
- This is a good overview and contains some good tutorials. When it comes to uploading using WS_FTP LE for Windows, I'd recommend the tutorial I created below. It's a bit more user-friendly.
This website will provide you with the steps necessary to upload your files and make them viewable to anyone surfing the WWW. If you need help uploading your files to the UVic server, you can contact the Computer Help Desk at 721-7687 or helpdesk@uvic.ca during the hours posted on their website: http://helpdesk.uvic.ca/resource/helpdesk/hours.html. Students uploading their website to a different web server (i.e., Shaw, Telus, etc.) should contact their Internet Service Provider for support.
UVic users should use the file transfer program to connect to their web server using the following information:
File Transfer
File Transfer Programs are used to transfer your HTML files and images to the web server space. These programs are often already installed on your computer. If not, they can be downloaded from the following sites:
Fetch is the File Transfer Program used on the Macintosh and can be found at http://fetchsoftworks.com/ The following are tutorials that may help you to learn how to upload files:

WS-FTP is the File Transfer Program used on Windows computers and can be found at http://www.ftpplanet.com/download.htm. The Pro version will cost, but they provide a temporary evaluation version. The "LE" version is more basic, but is permanently free. The UVic Help Desk have FTP tutorials. I have also created a tutorial for WS-FTP. You can access each of these by clicking the links below:
WS_FTP LE Tutorial by Valerie Irvine
http://www.educ.uvic.ca/compined/Links/wsftptut.htmNote that the above link is actually a relative link. If you go to View/Page Source (Netscape) or View/Source (IE) in your browser, you will see the HTML code (what looks like a bunch of garble). If you hunt for it, the link goes to "../../Links/wsftptut.htm" (a relative link!), but the text I chose to display shows the complete address. The display text and the actual link address can be different.

Access Permissions
Please note that, if you are uploading your files to the UVic server space, you will have to set the permissions on each file and folder you upload. Not all web servers require this. For example, Shaw automatically allows all uploaded files public viewing permissions.
On the UVic server, with the right permission settings, your material will be viewable on the Internet. To set permissions:
For Windows users, my WS_FTP LE tutorial (above) covers this.
For Macintosh users, go to the Access Permissions lesson on the Fetch Tutorial by the UVic help desk (above).
Folders much have the permissions set to:
Owner (read/write/execute)
Group (execute)
Other/Everyone (execute)These folders include your Netlink ID folder, your www folder, and any other folders you upload into your www folder.
Files must have the permissions set to:
Owner (read/write)
Group (read)
Other/Everyone (read)This includes HTML files, images, or any other files you upload.
Please continue onto the last section of this module on troubleshooting.
