Inserting charts

For your assignment, your presentation must include a slide with a chart and an organizational chart.  These charts must demonstrate the settings described below. In a previous section, you learned how to apply a slide layout, which will be needed to create charts in PowerPoint.

Insert a chart

Insert a new slide in your presentation and select the slide layout with the label "Chart" - the layout image will look like the following:

chart.jpg (3166 bytes)

In the "Slide" view of the new slide, the chart box on your slide should contain the following:

chart2.jpg (14289 bytes)

Double-click to add a chart.  A sample datasheet may appear with content already entered.  You will need to modify the data to show the following content for the column labels,  row labels, and cells.  Substitute labels and values are welcome if you wish to be creative with your content.  The same features must be demonstrated, however.

When the datasheet window (above) is being displayed, you may notice that the Menus in PowerPoint have changed slightly to accommodate formatting for a chart.  There is a chart menu (shown below) that allows you to choose the "Chart Type" (column, bar, line, pie, scatter, custom, etc.) and set your "Chart Options" (X- and Y-axis labels, title, gridlines, legend, data labels, and data table).  The 3-D view window will let you set the elevation and rotation values for viewing your chart.

The column chart you insert for your assignment should contain the following:

In summary, the chart in your slide should look like the following:

chart1.jpg (19142 bytes)

Insert an organizational chart

The next chart you need to include in your assignment is called an "organizational chart."  To insert one, create a new slide with the layout labelled "organizational chart."  As with the previous chart, you will be prompted to double-click on the chart box to enter the settings for the new chart.  You will get a window that looks something like the following:

orgchart.jpg (33601 bytes)

For your assignment, replace the text "Chart Title" with a title of your own, then enter text in each of the four boxes. Add more boxes, if you'd like, and format the boxes and lines to suit your preferences.  Settings can be changed under the "Boxes" and "Lines" menus on the Organization Chart window shown above.  To close the chart window, select "Exit and Return to Presentation" from the File menu.

Please continue to the final section of this module on Inserting a Table.
