Introduction

PowerPoint is a presentation software program that allows you to create electronic presentations or overhead transparencies.  At the most basic level, it is a step-up from using overheads.  The slides can be projected onto a screen for use much like a slide show or they can be copied onto overheads to use where computer hardware and projectors are not available.  Putting your slides onto overheads is recommended where you might be presenting your material in a new environment not yet tested for its functioning computing hardware and software. At UVIC, the Zap! Copy Centre in the Student Union Building will laserprint transparencies at the following cost: colour - $3.00 each, black & white - .65 each, with opening/scanning file charge - $5.00. The Education Curriculum Lab can produce black and white laser printed transparencies for $.85/each. Where the computer technology in a given location has not been tested, the use of the copied overheads are a good backup.

At a more advanced level, PowerPoint can produce electronic presentations that incorporate sound, video, hyperlinks, and more.  Outlines for student note-taking and handouts of slides can also be created to support your presentation. In this introductory module, you will learn the basic features in PowerPoint. In addition to using the instructional material provided in this module, students are expected to take advantage of the linked resources provided at the bottom of this webpage.  You are encouraged to post any questions to the listserv or email them to the coordinator.
