Workbook Webpages
You can save your workbook as a webpage similar to the way it's down in Word or
PowerPoint. For your assignment, you are asked to upload your Excel webpage files to your UVic
server space and submit the URL to the instructor. Click on the
following link to see a sample of what you are about to do:
Excel chart
webpage (from Excel 97)
Excel
chart webpage (from Excel XP)
To create your own workbook webpage, please do the following:
- Open your XXXdata workbook
- Click on the Chart tab to go to that spreadsheet as this will be the spreadsheet we want
to create as a webpage.
- Next, skip to the version that you're using. Again, 2000 users should
follow XP:
Click here for Excel 97 instructions
Click here to skip down to Excel XP instructions
For Excel 97:
- Go to the File menu and select Save As HTML. An Internet Wizard will start up
- Step 1: Data and chart to convert
- The Chart spreadsheet title will appear in the selection box. If it doesn't appear,
click Add and select it, then click Next.
- Step 2: Select conversion format
- Choose the option that allows you to insert a header and footer in addition to the data
or chart.
- Step 3: Enter the header and footer text you want

- Step 4: Finishing touches (HTML code, location)
- The final step asks for your preferences as to what code to use (select US/Western
European) and where you want to save the HTML file.
- Choose to save the result as an HTML file (and not to add the result to a
FrontPage web if you have FrontPage installed).
- Select the File Path for where to save the file. If you want to save it to another
location, click the Browse button.
- Give your file the name "XXXexcel.htm"
- Click Finish.

- More than just an "XXXexcel.htm" file will be created. There will be an
image file for the chart we created. In this case, it was named "XXXexcel1.gif"
You will need to upload both files and set file permissions for them both.
For Excel XP,
- Go to the File menu and select Save As Webpage.
You will get the following window:

- Select "Selection: Sheet" since you only want the one "Column" sheet
posted
- Click on the "Change Title" button to give the title to this page (this
will be the text used if it's bookmarked). Enter "XXXdata" or something else
you'd like.
- Name your new webpage "XXXexcel.htm" with "XXX" being your initials.
- Click Save.
- In the same location. where you stored the XXXexcel.htm file, a folder
will appear of the same name with _files added. In summary, along with the
XXXexcel.htm file, there will be a "XXXexcel_files" folder. Both the folder
and the .htm file must be uploaded. Remember, if you are using the UVic server
space, you will need to set file permissions for the .htm
file and for every file within the folder and also to set folder permissions
to the XXXexcel_files folder. There is a "Publish" feature in Excel XP, which
can transfer files for you. However, it is only able to transfer files and not
set file permissions.
Interactivity
Excel XP has a great new feature called "Interactivity" - you are able to
allow others to view your data on the web and even work with the numbers without
opening Excel. Check out the following link as an example.
http://www.educ.uvic.ca/compined/Level2/excel/interactive.htm (you will
need to view this within Internet Explorer)
To add this feature, all you have to do is click on the "Add interactivity"
checkbox in the above window.
That's it for this module! Congratulations on your work. Please return to
the Assignment section of the Excel module to review
your requirements.
