Introduction

As this program progresses, you will notice that less of a recipe approach to instruction may sometimes be used.  This is partly due to the fact that computing is a fluid field with new terms and new programs becoming available all the time.  It is important to get used to the discovery process, which is essential to keeping up to date with computers. You may find that many experienced computer users learn new software programs by simply exploring them and with minimal reference to the associated user manual. By exploring program features through experimentation and by accessing online resources when necessary, you will begin to find it easier to learn new programs or new versions of existing programs.

In this module, you will learn more about the Internet. Access to the Internet allows people not only to search for and learn a wide variety of information, it also permits the download of software programs for use on your personal computer and the exchange of files via the Internet as email attachments.  In this module, you will download and install a small program on your computer and compress a group of files before sending them as an attachment.  Because some regions have limited access to the Internet or some users have slow modem connections, it is important to compress larger files before attaching them to an email message.  Other features you will learn in this module include taking screenshots, learning good ergonomic habits for using computers, understanding some new technical terms, and some additional ways people communicate via the Internet, The browser used in this module will be Netscape, which is downloadable for free from http://www.netscape.com. Microsoft's browser, Internet Explorer, has the same basic features. You may use either browser to complete the module requirements.  If you have any difficulty finding comparable features, contact compined@uvic.ca for help on how to meet the requirements.
