Page setup and printing webpages

It is sometimes necessary to print webpages for the material found within them.   There are a number of options available to you, which you should explore, before pressing the print button.  To access these options in your browser, go to the "File" menu and select "Page Setup."  The windows as they appear in Internet Explorer and Netscape browsers are shown below.

Internet Explorer

In Internet Explorer, a window like the following will appear:

iepgsetp.jpg (35035 bytes)

There are four sections to this window:

1) "Paper" determines the size of the paper you wish to print on and the source at the printer (main feeder or manual tray)

2) "Headers and Footers" are the same as those you used in the Word module. This is the text inserted at the top and bottom of the printed page.  The above text may look like garbled code, but you can find out what they mean by clicking on the "What's this" button (with the question mark) iepgset2.jpg (840 bytes) at the top of the screen, then clicking on top of this code for an explanation

3) "Orientation" is the layout of your page material when printing.

portrait.jpg (1101 bytes) Portrait is the default layout with the paper with the longest side vertical
landscape.jpg (1082 bytes) Landscape is the layout with the longest side of the sheet being horizontal

4) "Margins" set the space from the edge of the page before content may be printed.

Netscape

In the Netscape, the page setup window will differ slightly and look like the following:

netpgset.jpg (24372 bytes)

Some features previously mentioned (like "orientation") will not appear in this window, but this setting can be accessed instead by clicking on the "Properties" button on the "Print" window.

Printing Frames

Sometimes, you may print a page and find that only a navigation bar appears printed, but nothing else.  When this happens, you have just printed one "frame" of a webpage.  The Comp-in-Ed website, for example, has two frames - one with the navigation bar and one with the page content.  To print a webpage,

For your assignment, you are asked to take a screenshot of the Page Setup window on your computer.  You learned about screenshots in an earlier lesson on this module.  Whether your screenshot is an image file or an image pasted into a word document, please name the file "XXXshot" (with XXX being your initials).  If you are having any difficulties, please email the listserv or the coordinator with any questions you may have.  This screenshot file will be compressed with a group of files before being submitted to the coordinator for marking. You will learn how to compress files in the last lesson of this module. Please continue to the next lesson on Newsgroups, Listservs, and Conference Boards.
