Presentations on the WWW

Web presentations are useful for instructors to put up their PowerPoint presentations following class, so students who may have missed a class may be able to view some material that was covered.  It also serves as an excellent back-up for instructors planning to use PowerPoint to give presentations.  If the program failed somehow, they could just use the web version to support their lecture.  It lacks the slide transitions and other fancier elements, but it does get the job done in a pinch!

For your assignment, you are asked to upload a presentation to your web server space, so it can be accessible as a website.  An example of a PowerPoint presentation posted to the Internet can be found at the following link:

http://www.educ.uvic.ca/compined/level2/ppoint/webpres/

There is a "click here to start" link, each slide is also individually linked, and Author name, email, and webpage is provided. You can also choose to insert a link for downloading a copy of the presentation.  This was not chosen, however, for the sample presentation above. Various options are available - for size of slide, type of navigation button, location of navigation bar, etc.

To create your own web presentation, you must first have an existing presentation that you would like to post. This could be your PowerPoint I presentation or a short one created just for demonstration. Once you have this presentation open, go to the File menu and select "Save as HTML" as shown below. This option may also show up as "Save as Webpage."

A wizard will appear that will show you through the steps to create a web-based presentation. This window will look similar to the following:

If you have any questions as you work through the wizard, click on the question mark button (ppttwo6.jpg (956 bytes)) to get help.

Once you have completed the wizard, there should be a folder with the same name as the presentation file name.  There should be one html file and one image (gif) file for each slide in your presentation, plus various other slides for navigation arrows, etc. Don't be surprised if there are a lot of contents to your folder.  In this case, my presentation "webpres.ppt" became a folder named "webpres."   Next, you must upload this folder to your UVIC (or other) server space.  To refresh you, there is a FTP tutorial for UVIC users at:

Fetch users can find a tutorial by the University of South Dakota at the following link
http://www.usd.edu/trio/mac/fetch.html
(note this tutorial is not customized for using the UVIC server)

Transfer your presentation folder into your "www" folder on your UVIC web server space. Follow the instruction provided in the above tutorial for giving folder permissions as you will need to set them properly for your presentation folder. Next, you will have to give each file permission as described in the section on setting permissions for files.  For your assignment, you will be required to provide the URL for your web presentation in your submission email.
