Page Setup

In the Internet II module, you learned a bit about page setup for your web browser.  This lesson will go over the page setup options available in Word.  These options will be similar in other word processing programs. For your assignment, you will apply line numbers to the entire document as described below.

There are a variety of options available to set up your pages.  To set your preferences, go to the File menu and select "Page Setup" to get a window similar to the following:

Margins

Under the "Margins" tab, you can set the top, bottom, left, and right margins.  The drop-down menu shows this setting would be applied to the "Whole Document."  If you wanted to change settings part-way through a document, you would choose "This Point Forward" from the drop-down menu. The point where the new margins would start would be determined by where your cursor is in the document.

The "Gutter" is the amount of space you might want to add to the margins for binding.  The number you enter will be added to the left margin. If you want this number added to all four margins, you would then but a check in the "Mirror margins" box.

To learn more about the header and footer margins, click on the question.jpg (753 bytes) button on the top right corner of the window, then click on the header section for information about header margins.  Repeat this step for the footer.

On each tab of the Page Setup window, there is a "Default..." button in the lower left corner.  If you click on this button, you will be asked if you would like to change the default settings for page setup, which will change all new documents based on the "Normal" template.  If you find you need to revise the margins from 1.25" to 1.00" every time you open a document, changing the default setup will save you this step.

Paper Size

On the "Paper Size" tab, you can determine what size of paper you will be printing the document onto.  The default is an 8.5 x 11" with "portrait" orientation.  If you find you want more width to a page, you can change the orientation from portrait to landscape.

Under the paper size drop-down menu, you can select letter, legal, and a whole range of other sizes. Scroll down the drop-down menu to view some of them. These are the paper sizes supported by your printer.  At the very botton is a "custom" option. If selected, you can enter the width and height in the text fields provided.

Paper Source

This setting will allow you to choose the tray on your printer from which you want paper drawn when printing this document.  If you have a coloured sheet you want to use for just the first page of the document, you would choose "Manual" from the "First Page" window and "Default" from the "Other Pages" window.

Layout

On the "Layout" tab, there is an interesting feature that allows you to display line numbers.  For your assignment, you are asked to open your "XXXedit.doc" and apply line numbers to the entire document. To do this,
