You can select the "Hide spelling errors in this document" and "Hide grammatical errors in this document" check boxes if you find the wavy lines distracting. You can always insert them after you complete your writing.
A shortcut to turning them off or on is to right-click the Spelling and Grammar status bar at the bottom of your window, which looks like the following:
A pop-up window will allow you to toggle on/off the options to hide the spelling errors, hide grammatical errors, and to view options. Double-clicking on the above Spelling and Grammar status bar will move through each spelling or grammatical error in your document and automatically open the correction pop-up menu for each word.
