Connecting to the UVIC server
To upload your HTML files to your UVIC site, open your WS-FTP program to get the
following window:

In the left screen, the folders and files on your computer (aka the"local
system") are displayed. The right screen will display the folders and files in
your space on the UVic computer (aka the " UVic server"). To connect to the
UVic server:
- Click the "Connect" button to get the following window

- To enter a new profile, click the "New" button.
- In the "Host Name/Address" field, type in web.uvic.ca (as
shown above). The profile name is just a name for you to be able to recognize when
choosing a host name from the drop-down menu. It has the same name in the above example.
- Leave "Host Type" as "Automatic detect"
- Click the "Apply" button to save this host profile for future
use.
- In the "User ID" field, type in your Netlink ID.
- Do not check the "Anonymous" checkbox. The UVic server needs to know
your login ID or it will not connect you to your server space.
- Enter your Netlink password in the "Password" field.
- Do not put a check in the "Save Pwd" checkbox. This may allow anyone
who can access this program the ability to access your server space.
- Click the "OK" button to connect. The FTP screen will
now display the folders and files in your folder on the UVic server. This may appear
in the "Remote System" window as follows:

- The top window displays the folders in which your Netlink folder or
"directory" is contained. In the above example, my personal directory
"virvine" is stored in the "93" folder within the "home1"
folder. Each Netlink ID is stored in a different folder.
- Since my account is relatively new, a "www" folder has been automatically
created for me. If you do not have a "www" folder, create one as follows:
- Click the "MkDir" button
- Type in the name of your new directory, which must be "www" (without the
quotes). The UVic server will look for files only in a folder named www. If it
cannot find it, your pages won't be served.
- Click OK
