Uploading folders and files to your "www" folder
Now that your "www" folder had been set up, transfer your html files into
this folder. In the following example, my bookmarks file is being transferred to my server
space at UVic. This will enable me to view my bookmarks from any computer connected to the
Internet, which can be quite handy. The URL for my bookmarks would be:
http://web.uvic.ca/~virvine/bookmark.htm
All UVicstudents will have the "http://web.uvic.ca/" section of the above
URL. Following that is a tilde "~" symbol (found at the top left of your
keyboard and will require you to press your shift button to access it). This symbol
denotes that the folder is a personal one, so any surfers viewing webpages within this
folder can be aware of that as they evaluate the contents of the webpages. The Netlink ID
follows the tilde ~. In this case, it was "virvine," and the file name
"bookmark.htm" appears last.
To move a file from your computer to your "www" folder,
- Be sure that you have opened your "www" folder so it appears at the end of the
string on the "Remote System" window as follows: /home1/93/virvine/www.
- Locate the file that you want to upload so that it is visible in the "Local
System" window. Please note that you should never upload a file with a
space in its name. Often, the remote system will not be able to read or delete it, thus
requiring you to get assistance from the Computer Help Desk to remove it. To avoid this,
please limit your filename to 8 characters. If want to mimic inserting a space, use an
underscore symbol "_" instead (which is Shift + the minus/dash key).
- To navigate to find a file, use the following tips:
- double-click on a folder to open it
- double-click on the green arrow to move up one level
- to move to a different drive, scroll down until you see a listing of drives as follows:

- double-click on the drive you want to open
- Select the file by clicking on it once, so that it is highlighted (as shown in the Local
System pane below)

- To upload this file (i.e., transfer it from the left Local System pane to the right
Remote system pane), click the arrow pointing right (shown circled above). The program
will then make a copy of the file in the Remote System Pane.
- Please note that if there is an existing file of the same name in the destination
window, FTP will overwrite the file without alerting you.
