Navigation
Many students are still learning how to navigate between windows on their computer
screen. For example, if you have your Browser open with the Comp-in-Ed webpage, but also
want to view your Word program, you will need to become familiar with how to move back and
forth between them.
On a Windows computer:
You can toggle back and forth between the Browser and your Word program using the
ALT and TAB keys on your keyboard. A window will appear that shows you the software
programs that are currently open on your computer. While you keep holding down the
"ALT" key, you can press the TAB key repeatedly until you have selected the
program which you want to view next.
On a Macintosh computer:
You can switch back and forth with the finder. The program you currently have
open will have its icon in the top right corner of your window. Click on that icon to view
the other programs that are currently open and select the one you want to open next.
On any type of computer:
You can tile the windows just a little so you can switch back and forth by
clicking on the window of the program you want to become active. When viewing the Browser
window, you must be able to see the Word window in the background and vice versa.
Two Browser windows:
For those students using Hotmail or UVIC Webmail, it may be helpful to have one
browser open with your email service and a second browser open with the Comp-in-Ed website
open. To open a second browser window, go to the "File" menu and select
"New" then "Window." Other command variations are "New" and
"Navigator" or "New Window."
