Graduate Programs in Curriculum Studies

Department of Curriculum & Instruction

The Faculty of Education at the University of Victoria offers a Master of Arts and a Master of Education in Curriculum Studies. The Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Studies has Curriculum Studies as a research area. These programs foster critical analysis of educational thought and practice (for example, the thinking and practice of planning, implementation, evaluation, learning and teaching) to discern unintended as well as intended effects. This analysis is focused not only at the system level, but also and more importantly, at the level of each person's daily professional practice, where the political and the personal are inevitably intertwined. Underlying this analysis is the ethical question of how to act responsibly and appropriately.

The programs are intended for educators from all venues (for example, schools, colleges, hospitals, government, business, industry, private practice, and the family) working at all levels of responsibility (for example, policy development, administration, evaluation, planning, teaching, advising, coaching, counselling or parenting). Curriculum Studies programs are generalist programs which offer a site in which educators can take up questions of practice that arise in their particular settings. The programs are designed to support educators to become more thoughtful and informed practitioners.
