The Faculty of Education at the University of Victoria offers a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Studies. There are seven areas of specialization within this program:

  • Art Education
  • Curriculum Studies
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Language and Literacy
  • Mathematics, Science, Technology, and Environmental Education
  • Music Education
  • Social, Cultural and Foundational Studies

The PhD in Educational Studies is a research-oriented program designed for students who wish to develop a comprehensive understanding and an integrated perspective of current educational theory and practice. It prepares graduates for professional, research and teaching positions in colleges and universities, or for leadership roles in school districts, provincial ministries and other public and private organizations, with regard to planning and implementation of curricula, instructional innovations and staff development programs.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

The PhD program consists of 45 units, of which there is a 30-unit dissertation and 15 units of coursework. The coursework is made up of 4.5 units of core courses and 10.5 units of Specialty and Elective Courses.
Candidacy Examinations will be completed in both the core and specialization areas as set by the Supervisory Committee in conjunction with the department's Graduate Admissions and Programs Committee. The candidacy examinations will be both written and oral.

* Normally, up to 6 units of contemporary equivalent or appropriate graduate coursework not used towards another degree may be transferred into the specialty area from recognized universities with the approval of the supervisory committee, the Departmental Graduate Advisor, and the Faculty of Graduate Studies (see Transfer Credit, 2005-2006 Graduate Studies Calendar, pg. 25). In special cases assessment of prior learning involving other educational activities, professional experiences, or credentials may be evaluated as equivalent to courses required in the specialty area allowing students to substitute appropriate elective courses for the required course. All applications for transfer credit and equivalent prior learning must be made at the time of admission or in the first semester of study. Students in cooperation with their supervisor and supervisory committees will make application for transfer credit and equivalent learning to the Department Graduate Advisor who will accept and forward the application to the Faculty of Graduate Studies or reject and return the application to the student.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT AND FEES


The PhD program requires a minimum of two consecutive terms of full-time study on campus, normally fall and spring, to access the core courses. Some specializations will necessitate somewhat longer periods to access the required coursework. Individual program specializations may have additional requirements. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND PROCEDURES

Candidates seeking admission must meet the entrance requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. These consist essentially of a recognized Master's degree, a minimum grade point average of B+, minimum two years of successful professional experience as verified by two confidential assessment reports from field supervisors, and other departmental requirements. Admission is on a competitive basis.

Your application must be accompanied by a two-page description of your research interest, and evidence of your facility at scholarly writing, for example a published article, chapter from your thesis, or major paper submitted in a graduate course (with name of professor).

Enrollment may be restricted in any given year and is always contingent upon the availability of appropriate program supervisors.
