TENURE TRACK ASSISTANT PROFESSOR in SCIENCE EDUCATION

The Department of Curriculum & Instruction, University of Victoria, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in the area of Science Education.

Responsibilities will include:

• Undergraduate teaching of elementary and middle school science education

• Graduate teaching in science education, science learning, and teacher development

• Graduate student supervision

• Maintaining an active agenda of research

• Actively contributing to university, professional, and community service.

Qualifications & Experience:

The potential candidate should have a completed or nearly completed Ph.D. or Ed.D. in science education, a record of successful teaching experience at the elementary or middle school level, and demonstrated capacity for scholarship in science education. Experience and expertise working collaboratively with schools or community groups to support the development of innovative science teaching practices would be considered an asset. Highly desirable qualifications include background in: environmental education, Indigenous perspectives, and information technology applications in the classroom.

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the Faculty of Education at the University of Victoria seeks applicants for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in Indigenous Education.The successful candidate will work with the Director of Indigenous Education in the Faculty of Education and a Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Knowledge and Learning.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Indigenous ancestry with knowledge of and lived experience in Indigenous communities, culture, and traditions
  • Ph.D. completed or will be completed at the time of the appointment
  • Active involvement in Indigenous Education
  • Teaching experience in K-12 education in public or band schools
  • Demonstrated ability to interact constructively with faculty, students, and Indigenous     communities
  • Some knowledge of an Indigenous language (speak, read, or write)
  • Experience doing educational research cooperatively with Indigenous communities

Responsibilities for this position include:

  • Teaching and developing where necessary undergraduate and graduate courses in Indigenous Education available to Indigenous and non-Indigenous students
  • Working with graduate students doing research in the area of Indigenous Education
  • Advising other faculty members on the development of appropriate Indigenous content and teaching/learning processes to be included in the undergraduate and graduate level courses in the Faculty
  • Providing ongoing consultation with educational agencies and Indigenous communities to facilitate constructive relationships with the Faculty
  • Maintaining an active research program in Indigenous knowledge, learning and teaching
  • Contributing to the department, faculty and university in service activities

In accordance with the University’s Equity Program and section 42 of the BC Human Rights Code, this position is limited to Aboriginal peoples.
