Appeals
A student
may:
- appeal
a decision made by an instructor to the Chair of the
department in which the student is registered
- appeal
a decision made by the department Chair to the Dean
of the faculty in which the student is registered

a decision made by the Dean or by the President under
the provisions of section 61 of the University Act
to the Senate Committee on Appeals (see current University

Attendance (as per current University
Calendar)
Students
are expected to attend all classes in which they are
enrolled. A department may require a student to withdraw
from a course if the student is registered in another
course that conflicts with it in time.
An instructor may refuse a student admission to a lecture
or laboratory because of lateness, mis-conduct, inattention
or failure to meet the responsibilities of the course.
Students who neglect their academic work, including
assignments, may be refused permission to write the
final examination in a course. Instructors
must inform students at the beginning of term in writing
of the minimum attendance requried at lectures and in
laboratories in order to qualify to write examinations.Students
who are absent because of illness, an accident or family
affliction should report ot their instructors on their
return to classes.
Classrooms
If
the classroom that you are assigned does not meet your
teaching requirements, please notify Ivy Reid in
room A247 and she will look for other alternatives.
Classroom space is extremely limited, however, and changes
are not always possible.
If you re-configure
the physical arrangement of the classroom for teaching/
learning purposes, please ensure the desks, tables and
chairs are returned to their original places for the
class following yours. It is also important to clean
the boards before leaving the classroom.
Please remind
students that food and beverages are strictly forbidden
in the classrooms. Your cooperation in this regard will
ensure a better environment for all.
Courier
Please
use your research/other accounts for courier charges.
Otherwise, the Chairs permission is required.
Please do not send personal couriers unless you have
a personal account with the company, cash available
at pick-up or are sending collect.
Course
Evaluations
Instructors
are requested to ensure a course evaluation is conducted
for each of their courses. Evaluations are usually done
during the last 2 weeks of class; a package will be
placed in your mailbox in advance. Please contact the
Dept. Office if you have not received your evaluation
package(s) in time for the last week of classes. Instructions
for carrying out the evaluations are on the cover sheet
of your evaluation package.
For further information see the Faculty policy on assessment
of instructors.
Course
Outlines
The University Calendar and policies frame
the course outline, and the outline frames the instructor's
plans and expectations for the course. Your outline
should address the following:
- your full name; means of contact? office hours?
- what is the calendar description of the course? unit
value?
-what are the course purposes/objective/learning goals?
- what textbook(s) or coursepack, if any, is/are required?
Recommended?
- what are the assignments, how will they be graded,
when are they due, and what are the standards and parameters?
-what are the general expectations, e.g. attendance?
Extensions? Late penalties?
-Grading Scales: a copy of the Department grading scale
must be included (see no. 3 below).
-Regarding plagiarism & cheating, please include
the following statement in your outline: Students
must abide by academic regulations as set out in the
university calendar. They must observe standards of
'scholarly integrity' especially with regards to plagiarism
and cheating (see current University Calendar.)
Several weeks before the term begins, please forward
a copy of each new course outline to the Chair at <cichair@uvic.ca>,
with a note of clarification that it is for review,
and wait for approval before forwarding to your own
secretary for printing; distribute a copy to each student
during the first week of classes. If this is not the
first time you have taught the course at UVic, please
provide the Dept. Office with an electronic copy of
your course outline by e-mailing it as an attachment
to your secretary.
Emergency
Procedures
All instructors are responsible for their
students in classes and offices during any emergency.
Please ensure you know which exits to use during a fire
drill and where you and your class are to assemble outside
the building. Please advise your students that persons
found in the building after a fire alarm has sounded
are subject to a $500 fine from the fire department.
Individual emergency evacuation plans are posted in
all hallways of the MacLaurin building.
Grades
Grades
are due 7 days after the last day of classes, or after
the final exam if applicable. For further information
see Summer or Winter
Grading Instructions.
Grading
Scales
The Department has approved an official Dept.
Graduate
and Undergraduate

to all Department course outlines.

Plagiarism
and Cheating
Students are expected to observe the same standards
of scholarly integrity as their academic and professional

in unethical academic behaviour, including the practices
described in the University Calendar, are subject to
penalty by the University.
In this regulation, "work" is defined as including
the following: written material, laboratory and computer
work, musical or art works, oral reports, audiovisual
or taped presentations, lesson plans, and material in
any medium submitted to an instructor for grading purposes.
(Refer to the University
Calendar)
Posting
of Grades
Grades
and Student Identification numbers are personal and
confidential. The Administrative Registrar provides
computer printouts of grades sorted by student number
to the Dept. Office approx. 3 weeks after final grade
sheets have been submitted. Students can look up their
own grades via WebReg, which requires a PIN; their grades
are available within days of the submission of the grade
sheets to Records Services.

Due to confidentiality of marks, assignments
MUST BE returned by the instructor directly to the student
either in class or during office hours. Prior arrangements
may be made to mail the assignments to students upon
receipt of a stamped, self-addressed envelope. Assignments
are NOT to be left outside a faculty office or in the
Dept. Office.
