Elementary Professional Degree Program (five-year)
Admission Requirements

 

based on the 2003-2004 University of Victoria Calendar, North Island College Calendar and BC Transfer Guide

Students seeking admission to Year Three of the five-year Elementary Professional Degree program offered at the University of Victoria require two full years of approved course work by April 30th of the year of application (20 college courses). This course work is described below.

YEARS ONE AND TWO AT NORTH ISLAND COLLEGE


Consult an Academic Adviser at UVic if you've completed course work at another college or university before attending North Island College.

Approved English (3.0 units or 2 college courses):   Two of ENG 115, 120, 121, 125, 126.

  • Try to take these courses in your first year.
  • We encourage students to take one composition and one literature course.
  • Speak with an Academic Adviser if you receive less than a B- grade in any first year English course. You may need to take additional English in Year Two.


Approved Canadian studies (3.0 units or 2 college courses):
  HIS 111 and 112 are recommended.

  • This course work may be taken in Year One or in Year Two.
  • Courses about Canada that cover topics included in the BC elementary social studies curriculum will be accepted. 
  • If you are unable to take HIS 111 and/or 112, you may choose from HIS 250, HIS 251; POL 109; SOC 212.
  • Courses that study one province or region of Canada are not normally accepted.


Approved mathematics (3.0 units or 2 college courses):
  MAT 162 and 163 are recommended.

  • This course work may be taken in Year One or in Year Two.
  • Any two of MAT (102 or 181), MAT 115, MAT 151, MAT 162, MAT 163, MAT 182 will be accepted.
  • An average grade of C+  is required to demonstrate competency in mathematics.
  • Statistics courses are not normally accepted. If you've already completed a statistics course that was taught by a mathematics department, speak with the Academic Adviser to find out if an exception can be made. As noted above, MAT 115 is acceptable.
  • If you've completed mathematics courses other than those described here, please consult the Academic Adviser.
  • Courses completed more than ten years prior to entering the program are not normally accepted.


Approved laboratory science (3.0 units or 2 college courses):
Try to take SSA 100  and one biology or physics course. If you cannot do this, we will accept two biology, two chemistry or two physics courses.

  • This course work may be taken in Year One or in Year Two.
  • Choose two from BIO102, BIO 103, BIO 110, BIO 111; CHE 110, CHE 111; PHY 100, PHY 101, PHY 120, PHY 121; SSA 100.
  • Geography courses will not be accepted to satisfy the laboratory science requirement.
  • Human anatomy and/or physiology courses will not be accepted.
  • If you've completed laboratory science courses other than those described here, please consult the Academic Adviser.
  • Courses completed more than ten years prior to entering the program are not normally accepted.


Approved "introductory" academic electives
(3.0 units or 2 college courses)


Approved "senior" academic electives
(7.5 units or 5 college courses)

  • Take these courses in Year Two.
  • The courses that you choose to take in Year One will determine what courses can be taken in Year Two to satisfy this requirement. Choose carefully and plan ahead.
  • A 200 level course can be accepted as "senior" if 3.0 units of "introductory" course work in that same subject were previously completed. For example: FRE 265 & 266 may be accepted as "senior" academic electives if FRE 145 & 146 were previously completed; SOC 210 & 230 may be accepted as "senior" academic electives if SOC 110 & 111 were previously completed. 
  • Check the BC Transfer Guide to ensure that the 200 level North Island College course you plan to take transfers to UVic at the 200 level in the same subject.

Approved electives
(7.5 units or 5 college courses)

  • These courses may be taken in Year One or in Year Two.
  • Most courses are acceptable. Check the BC Transfer Guide to ensure that the courses you select transfer to UVic.
  • You are encouraged to take at least one French course and one computer science course.
