I am a Professor of Learning and Development, working with graduate students and those preparing to become middle and secondary school educators. Research Since publishing articles in the Journal of Experimental Psychology in 1971 and 1973, I have continued to publish nationally and internationally over the last four decades, many with colleagues in the joint UVic-ECNU, China project (in its 25th year); some 28 students have co-authored with me, an accomplishment of which I am very proud. My publications are theoretical, empirical, and applied. Currently, I am working with my spouse, Dr. Mimi Harvey, Denison University, in ongoing research in Indonesia and East Asia; it began during a CIDA funded collaborative project between UVic (with many education faculty, including Dr. John Anderson, involved) and Universitas Terbuka, Indonesia (1990-1996). Since 1979, I have seen (happily, not all as supervisorJ) over 230 M.A. and Ph.D. students to completion, including over 40 in the Department of Psychology. Teaching and Awards The focus of my teaching has been in two areas - the psychology of adolescence and theories of learning. Prior to coming to UVic, I was named the Outstanding Teacher every year (1974-1979) during my tenure at the University of Missouri-Rolla, and in 1976 I was awarded the Amoco National Teaching Award. At UVic, I was nominated for both the 3M Award and the Alumni Award, and I received the Faculty of Education Excellence in Teaching Award in 2006. In Fall, 2007, for the recognition of my work with international students, I was awarded an Honorary Member of the University of Victoria Chapter of the International Golden Key Honour Society. Community Service While at UVic, I have given over 150 Professional Development workshops in districts throughout the province. Locally and provincially, I have had many wonderful experiences, such as serving on Victoria’s Alternative School Board during the 1980’s and being the Team Leader of one of B.C.’s Supported Child Care Research Teams during the 1990’s. On campus, I have served on committees at all levels, including Chair of the Department of Psychological Foundations from 1985-1990, Vice-President of the Faculty (University) Club, and Chair of the Senate Committee on Teaching and Learning from 1995-2000. |
