CACEP ACCREDITATION
WITH THE
CANADIAN COUNSELLING ASSOCIATION
UPDATE!!
In 2008, the University of Victoria approved revisions to the Master’s in Counselling program requirements in order to comply with the accreditation standards of the Canadian Counselling Association’s Council on Accreditation of Counsellor Education Programs (CACEP).
What does this mean for your program?
· A minimum of two years (24 months or six terms) will be required to complete both the M.Ed. and M.A. degrees
· Once completed, your degree will conform to the required standards for CACEP Accreditation
What is CACEP Accreditation?
The Council on Accreditation of Counsellor Education Programs (CACEP) is a body empowered by the Canadian Counselling Association (CCA) CACEP to review and grant “accredited status” to counsellor education programs in Canada. The Council has outlined the required course content, practicum and supervision experiences that counsellor education programs must provide to students in order to meet the standards of a professionally trained counsellor, as approved by the Canadian Counselling Association. The Department of Ed Psych & Leadership Studies at UVic has been working towards achieving CACEP Accreditation as a way to increase the quality and standards of the program for its students and to provide graduates with a competitive edge in their career planning and development.
Who Gets Accredited?
Programs in counselling psychology get accredited not individual students.
What about Certification with CCA or Registration with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC)?
Graduates of our program have always been eligible and qualified for certification with CCA or registration with BCACC. Accreditation will continue to provide students with the ability to obtain both qualifications.
When will the UVic Program Obtain CACEP Accreditation?
The new program has just finished its first year of delivery and CACEP requires that programs operate for a minimum of 2 years prior to being considered for accreditation. As such, UVic will deliver the new program for one (1) more year and then we will be eligible to formally apply for CACEP Accreditation. It is our plan to have obtained CACEP Accreditation by July 2011.
