Bachelor of Science (BSc) Kinesiology (Major, Honours, and Co-op)

This program is designed to allow the student to study human movement in the exercise, sport, recreation, and rehabilitation domains. It is an excellent foundation to a career in exercise management in a variety of settings. The degree is an appropriate undergraduate degree to precede study in medicine, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, chiropractic and massage therapy. Students not pursuing a further degree or diploma could seek positions in the fields of fitness, sport, recreation and employee wellness.

Students should note that many of the course requirements of the BSc degree have secondary school prerequisites, including a minimum of Biology 11, Chemistry 11 (Chemistry 12 recommended), Math 12 and Physics 11 (Physics 12 strongly recommended).

Recommended Sequence of Courses required in the KINE Major program.

Major and Honours programs are offered in the BSc Kinesiology Program and a Cooperative Education option is also available. The Major and Honours programs offer a science perspective in the study of fitness, exercise, sport, and physical activity. Options could focus on the physiological assessment of fitness and performance, and the prescription of exercise programs for individuals across the lifespan.

There is a Cooperative Education program available for BSc Kinesiology students. This program prepares the student to enter the field of exercise management. The program includes a sound knowledge base in the biological sciences and an opportunity to be involved in fitness testing, exercise programming and exercise rehabilitation. The Co-op option involves a four and a half year program which combines academic study on campus with alternating periods of work in a variety of exercise and/or fitness-related settings.  Link to more information about our Cooperative Education Programs

Selection Process (or how to apply)  New students enter the Faculties of Humanities, Social Science or Science in year one at UVic and apply by January 31 of their first year to transfer into the Faculty of Education Kinesiology program for their second year.

Applications will be considered from those who have at least 12 units of credit including:

  • a minimum of 6 units of science (from BIOL, CHEM, MATH, PHYS, EPHE 141, 241A, 241B)

  • 3 units of English

  • EPHE 143

  • a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 5.0 on the most recent session on the UVic 9.0 scale.
