Press
Release: New physical education labs redefine rehabilitation.
The School of Exercise Science, Physical & Health Education's Research Facility located in McKinnon 171, was originally
opened in 1981 as the Sport & Fitness Testing Centre. This facility
is currently utilized by faculty, graduate and undergraduate honours
students working in the exercise sciences.
History of the Sport & Fitness Testing Centre (SFC)
The SFC conducted physical
demands assessments (PDA) and offered counselling services for individuals
involved in occupations requiring specific fitness levels for safe
and proficient job performance. The SFC has been involved in the
development of bona fide Occupational Fitness Tests and Standards
for a number of occupations and the subsequent administration of
the tests, including the RCMP, Wildland Firefighting, Coastguard
and Emergency Response Units.
The SFC also conducted
physiological assessments and provided counselling services for
high-peformance athletes. Such services have been provided for Canada's
national teams in hockey, rowing, soccer, archery and rugby, for
national junior team basketball players and for elite shooters,
swimmers and middle distance runners. Members of the crews of Canada
1 and Canada 2 have also used the Lab's services as well as the
NHL hockey teams: Edmonton Oilers, LA Kings, and New York Rangers.
The SFC also conducted individual fitness assessments and used the
results to prescribe fitness regimens. Follow-up testing was also
available so individuals could see their fitness improvements.
The
SFC also supported laboratory experiences for students enrolled
in the National Coaching Institute.
